Suomalaisten Runojen Uskonto

This is a foundational work of Finnish folkloristics, written by Kaarle Krohn, one of the founding fathers of the discipline. Originally published in 1915 as the first volume in the seminal "Religions of the Finno-Ugric Peoples" series, it remains an essential reference for understanding the spiritual world of the Finnish people before and during the Christianization period. Krohn meticulously reconstructs the animistic foundation of Finnish folk religion through the rich body of folk poetry - the same oral tradition that gave us the Kalevala. He examines the vast hierarchy of spirits (haltiat) and deities, from the powerful Tapio of the forest to the household spirits that guarded Finnish homes. The work also traces the remarkable syncretism between indigenous beliefs and Christianity, showing how saints and demons absorbed and transformed older spiritual concepts. Based on two decades of research and supplemented with extensive folk poetry material, this volume draws on 37 photographs and illustrations documenting religious practices and sacred objects. Krohn's comparative approach - placing Finnish beliefs alongside other cultures' spiritual traditions - gives the work lasting scholarly value. For anyone seeking to understand the mythological foundations of Finnish culture, or the broader phenomenon of European folk religion, this century-old study remains indispensable.
