Subscription the disgrace of the English Church [1st edition]

In 1843, the Church of England faced a crisis of conscience. Thousands of clergy were required to subscribe to the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion-documents drafted in the 16th century-yet increasingly few truly believed them. C.N. Wodehouse, Canon of Norwich, mounts a passionate argument that this compulsory subscription had become a farce, forcing honest men to lie or leaving sincere believers excluded from ministry. Through careful historical analysis and theological reasoning, he demonstrates how the system bred hypocrisy among the clergy and confusion among the laity, undermining the Church's credibility in an age of increasing skepticism. Wodehouse does not dismiss the Articles themselves but argues that genuine unity must rest on understanding, not coerced assent. This is a window into a Victorian religious world in flux, where the collision between institutional doctrine and individual conscience produced genuine anguish. For readers interested in the history of faith, the evolution of Anglicanism, or the eternal tension between tradition and sincerity, Wodehouse's plea for honest belief remains strikingly relevant.
