Studies in Folk-Song and Popular Poetry

At the dawn of folk-song scholarship, Alfred M. Williams assembled a passionate defense of the music that ordinary people sang at work and hearth. These are not polished compositions but something rawer: the sea shanties bellowed by sailors hauling lines, the ballads passed down through generations in Scottish villages, the mournful melodies of Hungarian peasants and Breton fisherfolk. Williams argues that these songs deserve the same serious attention once reserved for great literature, for they contain truths about human experience that refined verse often misses. His essays range across continents, tracing how the same elemental feelings - longing, loss, joy, defiance - find different voices in different tongues. The writing breathes genuine love for its subject, making this more than an academic exercise: it is a plea to listen to the songs that have survived not through courts or institutions but through the stubborn persistence of ordinary people's hearts.
