Stray Pebbles from the Shores of Thought

Gould's 1892 collection gathers quiet intensities: nature verses where seasons turn through the page like slow curtains of light, love poems that ache from joy into longing and beyond, and sonnets that bend toward God and the eternal questions. This is Victorian introspection at its most unadorned, a woman writer thinking carefully about beauty, mortality, and the strange persistence of longing. The nature poems carry the particular quality of late 19th-century American verse, grounded in specific landscapes yet reaching toward symbolic weight. The love poems, especially, reveal a poet who understood that desire and renunciation are not opposites but dance partners. The sonnets attempt what sonnets always attempt: to hold infinity in fourteen lines. These are small, perfect pebbles, smoothed by attention, gathered from a mind that paid careful witness to the passing world.
