Story of One Short Life, 1783 to 1818
Samuel J. Mills lived only thirty-five years, but in that brief span he helped reshape global Christianity. Born in 1783 in Massachusetts, he became consumed with a vision: spreading God's word to every corner of the earth. As a young man, he co-founded the first American missionary society and the American Bible Society, organizations that would eventually distribute millions of Bibles worldwide. His final mission took him to the coast of West Africa, where he helped establish the colony that would become Liberia, a haven for freed slaves and a base for Christian outreach. He died on the return voyage, his body surrendered to the sea but his legacy just beginning. This is the story of a brief life that burned with extraordinary purpose, and whose ripples of ambition and faith are still felt across the world today.
