Stories of the Saints by Candle-Light

Nine children, a windswept island, and nine evenings of stories told by candlelight. This is Vera C. Barclay's 1922 gem, where a group of Cubs travel to the Isle of Wight for their summer camp, and each night their leaders unfold the lives of the saints. St. Benedict begins the sequence: a boy who chose faith amid temptation. What follows are tales of courage, sacrifice, and stubborn grace drawn from Christian tradition, woven into a frame narrative that captures the magic of childhood adventures. The Cubs explore rock pools, sing in the dark, and fall asleep to stories of men and women who changed the world through conviction. Barclay writes with a lightness that never preaches, letting the saints' actions speak louder than moral instruction. For readers who miss the simple pleasures of British children's literature from the interwar period, who love the glow of lanterns and the sound of waves, this book is a small treasure. It works best for families reading together or for anyone who wants to remember what it felt like to be young and listening in the dark.
