Stories of Enchantment

At the turn of the century, Jane Pentzer Myers crafted something rare: children's stories that refused to shy away from grief, displacement, and the complicated terrain of belonging. Stories of Enchantment gathers tales where the supernatural isn't merely decorative but serves as a language for what young hearts cannot otherwise express. The collection opens with "The Ghost Flower, or the White Blackbird," following Snow-flower, a girl who survives a massacre and finds refuge with a Native American couple. Myers traces her journey toward identity with a tenderness that feels modern, even as fantastical elements unfold around her: ghost flowers, talking birds, spirits that guide and protect. Other stories in the collection continue this pattern, weaving magic that mirrors emotional truth. What distinguishes these stories from typical Edwardian children's fare is their willingness to sit with sadness. The magic here isn't pure escapism; it's a way of processing loss, of making peace with fractured identities. These are tales for the child who loved the dark edges of fairy tales, who understood that enchantment and sorrow often share the same path.
