Stamp Collecting as a Pastime

Before digital collections and infinite scrolling, there was the stamp, a small rectangle of colored paper that could launch a lifelong obsession. Edward J. Nankivell's 1902 guide captures stamp collecting at its zenith, when enthusiasts traded across continents and built collections that represented years of patient research. Written with earnest enthusiasm and gentle defensiveness (the author clearly anticipates skeptics who dismiss the hobby as trivial), this book reveals how Edwardians found profound meaning in tiny pieces of paper: a crash course in world geography, a connection to global correspondents, and a meditative retreat from modern noise. Whether you collect vinyl, vintage cameras, or simply wonder why anyone would fuss over used postage, this window into a vanished era of analog passion speaks to something timeless about the human need to gather, study, and treasure.
