St Nicotine of the Peace Pipe

In this charmingly idiosyncratic 1909 meditation, Edward Vincent Heward elevates tobacco to the status of saint, chronicling the plant's improbable journey from Indigenous American ritual to the vice (and virtue) of Elizabethan England. The book reads less like a dry history than a fond eulogy for a companionable habit, populated by the usual suspects: Sir Walter Raleigh, who legend says taught James I to smoke; Sir John Beaumont; and sundry explorers who brought the leaf westward. Heward treats tobacco not merely as a commodity but as a social lubricant, a medicinal panacea, and a symbol of camaraderie woven into the fabric of civilization. The writing carries the peculiar confidence of an Edwardian who has not yet lived to see tobacco's moral reversal. For readers who enjoy curious cultural histories, early 20th-century prose, or simply want to understand how our ancestors thought about pleasure and habit, this remains a surprisingly readable artifact.
