Spiritual Folk-Songs of Early America

This is the raw material of American music before it had a name. George Pullen Jackson spent decades in the Appalachian South and beyond, collecting hymns and spirituals that had passed from mouth to mouth, generation to generation, without any written trace. What he gathered here in 1937 is a window into how ordinary people made meaning before recorded sound, when a tune traveled on breath and memory alone. The 250 songs range from haunting mountain hymns to work songs sung in fields, each one carrying the weight of communities that sang their faith into existence. Jackson provides both the words and the music, but more importantly, he traces how these melodies migrated, adapted, and survived. This is not mere antiquarianism. It is an act of rescue, preserving songs that might otherwise have vanished entirely. For anyone curious about where American music truly began, this remains an indispensable and quietly moving resource.
