Speeches and Addresses of H. R. H. the Prince of Wales: 1863-1888

This collection captures the voice of a future king finding his footing in the glare of imperial Britain. As Prince of Wales, Edward VII occupied a unique position for twenty-five years neither sovereign nor subject, but Britain incarnate in the public imagination. These speeches trace his evolution from newlywed prince to the era's most recognizable figure, revealing the rhetorical art required to embody a nation. Here he addresses empire, opens exhibitions, champions charitable causes, and navigates the delicate politics of royal visibility in an age when the monarchy's survival depended on public performance. The speeches reveal Victorian Britain at its most confident and complicated. Through his words we witness the expansion of empire, the rise of new industrial powers, and the social reforms reshaping British society. This is Edward VII before he became king learning to rule through language, establishing the modern model of royal public engagement that persists today. The collection illuminates both the man and the institution he would one day inherit.
