Spain and Her Colonies, Compiled from the Best Authorities

A grand Victorian compilation surveying the sweep of Spanish civilization from legendary origins through the height of imperial power. Wilberforce draws on chroniclers, historians, and antiquarians to trace the peninsula's transformation: from the Phoenician traders at Cádiz to Roman Hispania, from Visigothic kingdom to Moorish caliphate, and finally to the global empire whose silver fleets shaped the early modern world. The work reflects its era's confidence in synthesizing vast source material into a single narrative, offering readers both empirical history and the mythic beginnings that earlier historians treasured, from Tubal son of Japhet to the Argonauts guided by Hercules. Written from a 19th-century British perspective, it provides a fascinating window into how Victorians understood Spain's unique position as both European kingdom and transcontinental power. For readers interested in colonial history, imperial Spain, or the historiography of the era itself.
