Souvenir of the George Borrow Celebration: Norwich, July 5th, 1913

In July 1913, Norwich gathered to honor its most wandering son. George Borrow, the Victorian adventurer who walked across Europe, learned its languages, and wrote his way into the hearts of readers with works like The Bible in Spain and The Romany Rye, was celebrated in his birthplace with this commemorative volume. James Hooper's souvenir captures the strange magic of a man who lived between worlds: scholar and rover, gentleman and gypsy, Englishman who felt more at home with Romani communities than with society. The book traces Borrow's journey from Norfolk schoolboy to international celebrity, tracing the friendships, adventures, and obsessions that shaped his unforgettable books. But this is more than biography. It is a portrait of literary devotion, capturing how Borrow's passion for Romani culture and his mastery of languages opened doors to a world that no English writer had quite entered before. Illustrated with tributes and poetry, the volume stands as a time capsule of Edwardian reverence for a writer whose blend of fact and fiction still sparks debate. For lovers of Victorian travel writing, Romani history, and the romance of the open road, this little book preserves a moment when Norwich remembered its greatest wanderer.
