Something of Men I Have Known: With Some Papers of a General Nature, Political, Historical, and Retrospective

This is memoir as portrait gallery. Adlai Stevenson, who rose from Illinois lawyer to Vice President of the United States, looks back on the men and moments that shaped America's transformation from a nation healing from Civil War into an industrial power. His recollections of Abraham Lincoln are particularly treasured not the mythologized Lincoln of monuments, but the practical politician who understood the art of coalition and compromise. Stevenson writes with the relaxed confidence of a man who witnessed history from the inside: the great lawyers who could sway juries with moral force, the generation of statesmen who believed governance required character, the shifting terrain of American politics as the nineteenth century closed. These aren't comprehensive histories but intimate sketches, anecdotes passed down like family heirlooms, observations on how the country changed and what was lost in that change. For readers who wonder what American political culture looked like before it fractured, this book offers something rare: a firsthand account of an era's vanishing assumptions about public life.
