Somebody's Little Girl

A tender portrait of childhood memory and longing, set within the walls of a convent where young Bessie Bell has been placed after a fever epidemic sweeps through her town. Bessie carries fragments of a past she can barely recall: a grand house, a large white cat, the vague warmth of a mother's face. As she navigates her present life among the Sisters and other little girls, these dream-like memories blur with reality, creating a poetic inner world that feels both fragile and fiercely alive. The narrative builds with quiet intensity as Bessie is taken to the High Mountain, where she encounters children utterly different from her convent companions, and meets a wise woman who somehow understands her fragmented recollections. The revelation that unfolds is both surprising and inevitable, a reunion that validates every unanswered question Bessie has carried. Young writes with delicate psychological precision for a children's book of its era, capturing how childhood memory works in fragments and feelings rather than linear narrative. The result is a quietly devastating story about belonging and the ache of not knowing where you come from.
