Some Account of the Oxford University Press, 1468-1921

Five centuries of the world's most storied publishing house, told in its own words. This official history traces the Oxford University Press from a humble 15th-century printing operation above a country bookshop to a global institution shaping how the English-speaking world reads, learns, and thinks. Along the way, we encounter the scholars, printers, and visionaries who built something unprecedented: a press that answered to no commercial master, whose profits funded Oxford's colleges, and whose dictionaries, bibles, and classical texts became the very infrastructure of the English language. The narrative stretches from the earliest printed Greek texts through the Victorian explosion of educational publishing, into the complex early 20th century when the Press navigated war, empire, and modernity. Written with institutional pride but genuine scholarly rigor, this remains the essential account of how a university press became indispensable.
