Social Problems in Porto Rico

Social Problems in Porto Rico, written by Fred K. Fleagle in the early 20th century, examines the social conditions of Puerto Rico's rural population, particularly the jíbaro, or rural laborer. The book presents data from the 1910 census to highlight disparities between urban and rural communities and discusses issues such as inadequate housing, agricultural influences, and overpopulation. Fleagle's work serves as a foundational text for classroom study in rural sociology, aiming to provide an objective analysis of the social landscape without casting judgment on the island or its inhabitants.
