Sniping in France: With Notes on the Scientific Training of Scouts, Observers, and Snipers

At the outbreak of the Great War, British soldiers on the Western Front were dying at horrifying rates to an enemy they could rarely see. German snipers, trained and equipped with precision, held deadly dominion over the trenches. Then came Major Hesketh-Prichard, a hunter, marksman, and adventurer whose lifelong obsession with rifles and fieldcraft found grim new purpose in the killing fields of France. This book is his account of how he transformed British sniping from amateurish desperation into a scientific discipline that reversed the fortunes of the trench war. He details the mathematical precision required, the psychology of the shot, and the training methods that turned ordinary soldiers into deadly marksmen. Yet what elevates this beyond a technical manual is the tension at its heart: a man who spent his life hunting animals now hunting men, and finding in that transition no small amount of moral weight. The methods he pioneered are credited with saving thousands of Allied lives. Essential reading for anyone interested in how one person's expertise can alter the calculus of war.
