Snakes: Curiosities and Wonders of Serpent Life

In 1882, a Victorian naturalist mounted a passionate defense of the most reviled creature in the animal kingdom. Catherine Cooper Hopley wrote Snakes not as a field guide but as an act of advocacy, challenging readers to see serpents not as symbols of evil but as remarkable creatures worthy of respect. Drawing on her own encounters in the wild, Hopley traces snake anatomy, feeding mechanisms, and behavior with the meticulous observation of early ethology, while dismantling the superstitions and fears that have shadowed these animals for centuries. Her voice is both scientific and impassioned, a woman writing against the cultural grain of her time. What makes this book endure is not just its natural history but its argument: that prejudice distorts observation, and that wonder requires overcoming repulsion. For readers interested in Victorian science, the history of women in natural history, or the strange history of human attitudes toward reptiles, Hopley's work offers a window into how one woman tried to change the world's mind about a creature it had decided to hate.
