Smokiana: Historical; Ethnographical

In 1890, when tobacco bound every continent and every class together, a Victorian gentleman set out to document the world's smoking customs. R. T. Pritchett's remarkable volume captures a moment before the twentieth century's wars, health campaigns, and cultural shifts transformed smoking from a universal ritual into a contested practice. Through detailed descriptions and illustrations, he surveys pipes carved from clay, bog wood, meerschaum, and precious materials across Europe, Africa, and Asia, examining how pipe-making evolved from regional craft traditions into specialized artistry. But this is far more than a catalog of objects. Pritchett illuminates the social rituals embedded in smoking practices worldwide: the ceremonial passing of pipes, the significance of pipe-bearers in African courts, the opium pipes of Asia, the clay pipes smoked by European workers. The book reveals how smoking served as a language of hospitality, status, and spirituality across radically different cultures. Today it stands as a fascinating time capsule, documenting practices that have largely vanished from daily life.
