Sketches of Church History, from A.d. 33 to the Reformation

Sketches of Church History is a sweeping Victorian narrative that traces Christianity's extraordinary transformation from a handful of frightened fishermen in Jerusalem to the dominant spiritual force of medieval Europe. Robertson, an Anglican canon at Canterbury, brings both scholarly rigor and deep devotional conviction to this task. Beginning with the dramatic events of Pentecost, he follows the apostolic mission across the Roman Empire, chronicling the faith's encounters with Roman persecution, its theological battles over doctrine, and its gradual emergence as an institution of unprecedented power and reach. The narrative moves through the Church Fathers, the great councils that defined orthodoxy, the conversion of Constantine, and the slow accumulation of papal authority, culminating in the upheavals of the Reformation. This is not neutral history but the work of a 19th-century churchman writing for readers who shared his assumptions about Western civilization's Christian heritage.
