Sketch of the Reformation in England

Few moments in English history reshaped the nation more violently than its break from Rome. John J. Blunt, writing in 1832 with the benefit of centuries hindsight yet still close to the living memory of religious conflict, traces the English Reformation from its deep roots in clerical discontent through Henry VIII's catastrophic decision to reject papal authority, and onward through the theological whiplash of six successive monarchs. This is not merely a chronicle of doctrinal shifts; it is an examination of how a kingdom fundamentally renegotiated its relationship with God, crown, and conscience. Blunt illuminates the raw political calculations that masked themselves as spiritual reform, the dissolution of monasteries as both theological and economic revolution, and the fragile Elizabethan settlement that finally stabilized a church forever torn between Rome and Geneva. For readers seeking to understand the origins of modern English identity, the roots of Anglicanism's peculiar compromises, or the blood price paid for religious certainty, Blunt offers a clear-eyed Victorian perspective on a transformation that defined a nation.
