Sir Walter Raleigh and the Air History: A Personal Recollection

In the chaotic aftermath of the Great War, a man named Walter Raleigh undertook an impossible task: to document the birth of aerial warfare while it was still being forgotten. H.A. Jones offers this account of Raleigh's quixotic mission to compile an official history of the Royal Air Force, capturing both the exhilaration and the frustration of preserving memory against bureaucratic indifference. We follow Raleigh to France, to dusty archives, to conversations with young pilots still haunted by what they had witnessed in the skies. The book radiates a particular interwar melancholy, that brief window when the air war's pioneers were still alive to tell their stories, before the myths calcified. Jones renders beautifully the tension between Raleigh's conviction that this history mattered and his despair at official records that sanitized or erased the messy human truth. This is not glorification. It is something rarer: a witness trying to get the record right, knowing that every passing year makes it harder.
