Sir George Etienne Cartier: His Work for Canada and His Services to Montreal

Delivered in 1913 before the Canadian Club of Montreal, this address honors Sir George Etienne Cartier, the visionary leader who helped forge the Dominion of Canada through the fires of Confederation. John Boyd traces Cartier's political career from the rebellions of 1837 through the tumultuous negotiations that united British North America into a single nation, paying particular attention to his role in shaping Montreal's commercial and civic identity. The address captures how Cartier's famous coalition of French and English Canadians, his navigation of British colonial interests, and his pragmatic politics made Confederation possible when mere geography suggested it should fail. This is not biography in the modern sense but rather hagiography of the kind early twentieth-century Canadians practiced: a reverent accounting of national foundations, written when the nation Cartier helped build was still young enough to remember him. For readers interested in how Canadians once understood their own origins, or in the construction of national mythology, this address offers a vivid window into the heroic narrative of nation-building that dominated early Canadian historiography.
