Short Stories and Selections for Use in the Secondary Schools

A curated portal to the great writers of the 19th century, this anthology was designed to introduce secondary school students to literature that would shape their intellectual lives. The selections span fiction and essays, chosen not merely to teach but to awaken a lifelong love of language and ideas. What makes this collection remarkable is its ambition: it fights against the pull of easily consumed material, instead offering young readers access to works that reward careful attention. The compiler believed that exposure to worthy literature could transform a reader, and the pieces gathered here reflect that faith in literature's power to educate and elevate. Today it stands as a window into what earlier generations considered essential building blocks of cultural literacy, and which stories were trusted to form young minds.
