Short History of the London Rifle Brigade

Written in the midst of World War I, this contemporaneous account traces the London Rifle Brigade from its origins as a volunteer corps in 1859 through its transformation into a fighting unit that would suffer devastating losses at Ypres. The author, writing while the war still raged, offers a remarkable window into the volunteer spirit that drove ordinary Londoners to become soldiers: clerks and shopkeepers who trained on ranges around the City, who marched in their spare time, and who in 1914 answered the call to arms with little more than enthusiasm and a sense of duty. The book captures both the romance of that early military tradition and the brutal reality of trench warfare that awaited them on the Western Front. Detailed accounts of officers, unit reorganizations, and the day-to-day horrors faced by ordinary soldiers give this volume its lasting power as a primary source. This is not polished history but urgent testimony from someone who lived through it, recording a chapter in London's military legacy before it was too late.
