Seven Maids of Far Cathay: Being English Notes from a Chinese Class Book

This volume captures something genuinely rare: the voices of seven Chinese women students at the Woman's Anglo-Chinese College in early 20th century China, learning English through creative writing. The girls, a group of young women navigating the strange space between cultures, penned essays, biographies, folklore, and letters as language exercises, and what emerges is neither a textbook nor conventional fiction but something more intimate. We hear them struggle with idioms, explain their customs to imagined American readers, and grapple with what it means to be educated in a foreign tongue while remaining deeply Chinese. The writing is sometimes awkward, sometimes luminous, but always revealing. These are not 'maids' as one misremembered description claims, but students, young women using language as a bridge and a weapon, preparing for futures that would reshape China. The book endures as an artifact of early cross-cultural education, a document of hope and transformation, and a testament to voices rarely preserved from this period.
