Secrets of Scene Painting and Stage Effects

This is a time machine bound for the golden age of live theater. Written by showman Will Goldston, this practical manual was the backstage bible for amateur companies and small venues seeking to create Broadway-quality illusions on shoestring budgets. It walks readers through every aspect of theatrical craftsmanship: selecting and prepping materials like flax canvas and distemper paints, mastering perspective for convincing interiors and street scenes, mixing colors to manipulate light and shadow, and constructing everything from simple back cloths to elaborate mechanical effects. Goldston reveals the secrets behind the thunder that shook audiences, rain that fell on command, and horses that seemed to gallop across stages without a single animal in sight. Beyond the technical instructions, the book captures a philosophy of theater where resourcefulness and imagination mattered more than expensive equipment. It emphasizes broad, stage-true effects that read clearly from the house, principles that remain relevant for anyone working in theater today.
