San Xavier Del Bac, Arizona: A Descriptive and Historical Guide

San Xavier del Bac rises from the Arizona desert like a fever dream of white stone and hand-painted saints. Built by Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino in the late 1600s, this mission is considered the finest example of Spanish mission architecture in the United States. Its facade blends Spanish colonial formality with Indigenous artistic impulses and Moorish decorative elements in a way that has no true parallel on the continent. The interior glows with original paintings, carved altar screens, and a luminosity that feels salvaged from another century. This WPA guide, compiled in 1940, traces the mission's extraordinary journey through centuries of turbulence: Native revolts, Apache raids, abandonment, and restoration. The writers understood they were documenting something fragile, a landmark already ancient by American standards. They capture both the physical glory of the mission and the complex cultural collision that produced it. For anyone drawn to the Southwest's layered history, this little book is a portal into a world where faith, artistry, and survival intertwined in the desert heat.
