Salvador of the Twentieth Century

Published in 1911, this is a remarkable time capsule from an era when El Salvador was still carving its identity in the crucible of modernity. Percy F. Martin wrote with the keen eye of an observer present at a nation's awkward, vital adolescence: the coffee plantations blooming across volcanic highlands, the remnants of Spanish colonial power giving way to fragile republican structures, and the constant tension between ambitious criollo elites and the indigenous masses whose labor built the country. The book captures a El Salvador poised between its colonial past and an uncertain twentieth century, grappling with the same questions that would define Central American politics for the next hundred years. Martin provides detailed geographical descriptions that reveal a country of startling beauty and strategic importance, while documenting the political machinations, regional rivalries, and external pressures that shaped Salvadoran governance. This is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the deep historical currents that continue to shape El Salvador today, written by someone who watched the nation take its modern form.
