Salona, Fairfax County, Virginia

Salona is more than a house. It is a living_archive of American ambition, survival, and erasure. Set in what is now affluent McLean, Virginia, this colonial brick dwelling began as a 2,000-acre land grant to Thomas Lee in 1719 and became the stage for moments that shaped a young republic: a visit from President James Madison, refuge during the British invasion of 1812, and the quiet endurance of a working farm through the Civil War. Anderson traces the estate through the hands of the Lees, Maffitts, and Smoots, revealing how one patch of Northern Virginia earth witnessed the Revolution's aftermath, the trauma of a second British attack, and the agricultural economy of a divided nation. But Salona's story does not end in the 19th century. Its transformation into the commercial corridor of modern McLean poses the question every historic property faces: what remains of the past when the past is paved over? For readers who believe places hold memory, this is a meditation on permanence and loss told through brick, field, and time.
