Sales Resistance

In a world where the Pulitzer Prize goes to advertising copy and the most respected citizen wears a suit and closes deals, being a non-consumer is practically criminal. That's the predicament facing Perry Mansfield, a man who has somehow retained the dangerous luxury of not wanting anything. As society's machinery of persuasion turns its full force against him, Mansfield discovers that in a civilization built on selling, the only unpardonable sin is refusing to buy. Written in the 1950s, Sales Resistance is a viciously funny portrait of a future that feels uncomfortably close. Still understood something essential: that a society built on endless consumption must eventually treat those who refuse to participate as enemies of the state. It's sharp, it's strange, and it asks whether any of us are truly free when we're constantly being sold to.
