Rustic Chivalry (cavalleria Rusticana): Melodrama in One Act

The opera that dragged Italian opera out of mythology and into the blood-soaked earth of a Sicilian village. When Turiddu returns from military service to find his former love married to another, he drifts into the arms of Santuzza - but his obsession with Lola festers, and soon the entire village knows of his infidelity. What unfolds is a brutal cascade of betrayal and vengeance, played out against the backdrop of an Easter celebration where community honor and personal passion collide with deadly consequences. Mascagni's score pulses with raw emotion: tenderness that erupts into fury, religious chorales that give way to murder, and the famous Intermezzo - a haunting meditation that provides just enough stillness before the final catastrophe. This is verismo at its most ferocious, opera's answer to naturalism, where peasants fight and die for love and pride rather than emperors and gods. One act. Forty minutes. Devastating.
