Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom: Or, the Escape of William and Ellen Craft from Slavery

In 1848, a married couple did the impossible. Ellen Craft, whose light complexion allowed her to pass as white, disguised herself as a gentleman planter traveling for his health. Her husband William posed as her enslaved servant, carrying her baggage. Together they boarded trains and steamboats, traveling a thousand miles through the heart of the slaveholding South to Philadelphia, arriving on Christmas Day. Their audacity stunned the nation. This is their story in their own words, published in 1860 on the eve of the Civil War. Beyond the daring escape lies a profound love story and a devastating portrait of a nation built on violence and stolen lives. The Crafts risked everything not just for themselves, but to expose the rot at the foundation of American democracy. Their narrative helped ignite a revolution.
