Rulers of India: The Earl of Mayo

In the blood-soaked wake of 1857, the British Empire faced an existential question: how to rule a subcontinent that had just risen in armed revolt. This is the world of the sixth Earl of Mayo, Richard Southwell Bourke, who arrived in India as Viceroy to find an empire haunted by its own violence and paranoia. Hunter's account traces Mayo's extraordinary campaign to win back the loyalty of India's princely states. Where his predecessors saw threat in every native ruler, Mayo recognized an uncomfortable truth: the British could not govern India alone. His solution was both simple and revolutionary: transform enemies into partners. Through painstaking diplomacy, strategic concessions, and genuine engagement with Indian rulers, Mayo sought to build a new imperial compact one that acknowledged the princes not as relics to be abolished, but as essential pillars of British rule. This is imperial history written from the inside, by a man who understood both the brutality and the fragility of the enterprise. It remains essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how the British actually held India, and the fragile bargains that sustained empire.
