Ruby: A Story of the Australian Bush

On a scorching Christmas Day in the Australian bush, a young girl named Ruby Thorne stands on the verandah, shading her eyes from the relentless sun and watching the road for her father. She has never known her real mother - 'mamma in heaven' is a distant figure compared to the unaffectionate stepmother who lies fretful on the sofa inside. Ruby dreams of Scotland, that 'bonnie' place she's never seen, imagining it as a land of white Christmases and warmth that this parched landscape cannot provide. Written in the late 19th century, this quiet novel follows Ruby as she navigates the loneliness of being a child without a mother's love, finding small kindnesses in the harsh Australian outback while holding tight to the imagined comfort of a mother waiting somewhere beyond the sea. It is a story about longing, resilience, and the particular ache of a child who must make a home in a place that never quite feels like belonging.
