Report of Mr. Wood's Visit to the Choctaw and Cherokee Missions. 1855

In 1855, George W. Wood, an inspector for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, traveled through Choctaw and Cherokee territory, documenting what he saw at mission schools during one of the most volatile decades in American history. His report captures a moment on the brink: the Choctaw Council had just passed legislation reshaping how boarding schools would be run, and Wood records his conversations with missionaries grappling with compliance, autonomy, and the moral weight of slavery hovering over everything. This isn't a celebration of missionary work. It's something more complicated and more valuable: a window into the tensions between Native nations asserting educational sovereignty, missionaries caught between their religious convictions and political realities, and a region sliding toward civil war. Wood writes about reception, about commitment, about the harmonious discussions and the unspoken questions that couldn't yet be answered. What emerges is a document saturated with the anxieties of 1855 - about what the future holds, about who controls these institutions, about how Christian missionaries in Indian Territory should position themselves as the nation fractures. For readers interested in primary sources on American history, Native American studies, or the复杂 origins of the Civil War, this report offers an imperfect but invaluable glimpse into a world about to change forever.
