William H. Clark

Biographies, History - American, History - Warfare

This is a soldier's-eye view of the Civil War, written in the raw aftermath by a man who lived it. William H. Clark was a private in Company E of the 34th Massachusetts Infantry, and his memoir captures what the war looked like from the ground: the brutal marches, the strange camaraderie that forms between men who might die together, the pitch-black humor that kept soldiers sane amid horror. Clark writes about leaving Worcester, about camp life with its absurdities and privations, about the fights at Harper's Ferry and Newmarket. But this isn't a grand strategic history. It's one man's attempt to hold onto the faces of the men he served with, to remember those who didn't come home. The book ends on May 15, 1864, when Clark himself took a disabling wound. What remains is both a tribute and a memorial, the words of a survivor trying to do right by the fallen. For readers who want to understand what the Civil War actually felt like to the men who fought it, this is an invaluable, intimate record.
