Reminiscences of the Civil War, 1861-1865

A raw, intimate account from the Confederate side of America's bloodiest conflict, written by a soldier who lived it. Preston Lafayette Ledford composed these memoirs decades after the war's end, driven by an urgent fear: that the personal stories of men who fought and died would vanish without anyone to tell them. He begins not with battles but with the political tensions tearing the nation apart, the secession, and the devastating moment families watched their sons and husbands march away toward an uncertain fate. What emerges is neither a military chronicle nor a political treatise, but something more valuable: the human cost rendered in personal anecdote, the emotional farewells, the small tragedies that larger histories overlook. Ledford writes with straightforward dignity, refusing to dramatize or sentimentalize, instead preserving what he calls the 'untold stories' of soldiers on both sides who experienced the war's horror firsthand. For readers seeking primary sources that capture the Confederate perspective and the personal dimensions of a conflict that still shapes American identity, this memoir offers an authentic voice from a pivotal but often sanitized era.
