Reminiscences of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey

Joseph Cottle knew them before they were monuments. As a young Bristol publisher, he published Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey when they were still hungry poets with revolutionary ideas and no money. This memoir is his account of those formative years, when the future Lake Poets were just two ambitious friends dreaming of a utopian society called Pantisocracy, a communal settlement they planned to build on the banks of the Susquehanna in America. Cottle introduces us to the whole circle: Robert Lovell, who married Southey's Sara and then died young; George Burnet, who first proposed the scheme; and the brilliant, unstable Coleridge himself, already struggling with the opium dependence that would define his later years. Written with the fond disorder of memory, this book captures the raw energy and naive grandeur of young men who believed poetry could remake the world. It is invaluable not as polished literary history but as something rarer: a witness to the mess, the hope, and the humanity behind the Romantic movement's birth.
