Religious Poems, Selected

These poems were written by people who took prayer seriously. Frances R. Havergal burns with devotion in "Our King," her words reaching toward the divine with an urgency that feels almost embarrassing in its honesty. Elizabeth Barrett Browning meditates on death and rest in "The Sleep," finding in dissolution the comfort of return. Horatius Bonar, the Scottish minister, writes of longing and presence with the steadiness of someone who has waited long in the dark. Collected in 1914, this anthology gathers voices from across the nineteenth century's religious imagination: poems about prayer as conversation, love as theology, and faith as something lived rather than performed. The poets here don't offer easy answers. They offer something more valuable: the honest reckoning of souls trying to speak to God, or to understand why they cannot. The language is sometimes formal, the metaphors drawn from an older world, but the hunger underneath is unmistakable. These are poems for anyone who has ever wanted to pray and found the words wouldn't come, or found them coming anyway, unbidden, in the small hours of the night.
