Religion and Ceremonies of the Lenape

One of the earliest scholarly recordings of Lenape spiritual life, based on Harrington's direct conversations with Delaware elders in the early 20th century. The book documents a sophisticated religious system centered on a supreme creator and populated by the manĭʹtowŭk, the spirits governing every river, mountain, and forest. Harrington details the Annual Ceremony and seasonal rituals that structured Lenape existence, painting a picture of a people whose spirituality was inseparable from the landscape they inhabited. This volume matters not as a perfect artifact, it reflects the biases and limitations of its era, but as a rare window onto traditions that were already fading under the pressures of colonization. The spiritual worldview preserved here, with its intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world, offers something increasingly valuable: a record of how one Indigenous nation understood the sacred. For readers interested in Native American religions, early American anthropology, or the cultural heritage of the Delaware Valley, this remains an essential primary source.
