Reflections on the Rise and Fall of the Ancient Republicks: Adapted to the Present State of Great Britain
1759
Reflections on the Rise and Fall of the Ancient Republicks, published in 1759 by Edward Wortley Montagu, analyzes the governance and societal structures of ancient republics such as Sparta, Athens, and Rome. Montagu draws parallels between the political challenges faced by these states and the contemporary issues in Great Britain, emphasizing the importance of unity and civic virtue to prevent decline. The work serves as a historical reflection on the lessons of the past, warning against the disunity that can lead to the downfall of republics.

— Edward Wortley Montagu
