Reasons Why a Churchman May with Great Justice Refuse to Subscribe to the British and Foreign Bible Society

In 1817, the British and Foreign Bible Society was revolutionizing religious publishing by selling cheap, unbound Bibles without commentary or liturgical context. To conservative Anglicans like Richard Lockwood, this represented a dangerous liberalization that stripped scripture of the church's interpretive guidance and allied Protestant Dissenters with the establishment. This pamphlet argues that subscribing to the BFBS would compromise a churchman's loyalty to the Church of England by forcing him into doctrinal partnership with Unitarians, Baptists, and other dissenters whose "diverse interpretations" threatened to splinter Christianity into competing and potentially heretical factions. Lockwood advocates instead for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, which maintained traditional Anglican liturgy, provided Bibles with helpful notes and commentary, and included Prayer Books alongside scripture.
