Rabinal-Achi: Vepu Xahoh-Tun U Bi Xahoh Rech Vae Tinamit Rabinal

This is a 500-year-old Maya drama that still breathes. Still performed every January 25th in the Guatemalan town of Rabinal, it is one of the few surviving pre-Columbian theatrical works on Earth. The play dramatizes a historical feud between Rabinal and the powerful K'iche' kingdom, centering on the capture and ritual sacrifice of a noble warrior named Nahualtzin. But calling it a tragedy misses the point. Through song, masked dance, and elaborate ceremony, the drama weaves diplomatic negotiations, mystical transformations, and the brutal economics of tribute and war into something that transcends simple storytelling. The Spanish banned this play for centuries. The Maya kept it alive in secret, passing it down until the ban lifted and the whole town could take the stage again. Dennis Tedlock's translation captures not just the words but the living rhythm of how this piece actually moves in performance. This is not a museum piece. It is a living tradition, a window into a civilization that understood drama as sacred civic duty, where the community itself becomes the cast.
