Travel & Geography

In 1896, a determined American woman crossed the Pacific to witness a kingdom on the edge of transformation. Louise Jordan Miln arrived in Korea alongside her husband and their party, entering a world that had only just begun to welcome Western visitors. What she found delighted her: a land of elaborate court ceremonies, of women who painted their faces white and men who braided their hair in configurations she had never seen, of mountain temples and market stalls where vendors sold silks and silver and secrets. Miln writes with the hungry curiosity of someone aware she is documenting something vanishing. Japan is tightening its grip, modernization is accelerating, and the old Korea she describes would, within a generation, exist largely in memory. This is travel writing as historical artifact: a privileged, sometimes bemused, but genuinely attentive Westerner's portrait of a kingdom in its final year of relative isolation. For readers interested in late-Victorian travel literature or the lost world of Joseon-era Korea, Miln offers an irreplaceable window.
