Q. E. D., or New Light on the Doctrine of Creation

Written in the aftermath of the First World War, this 1917 work emerged from a moment when the horrors of industrialized slaughter had shattered Victorian faith in progress. George McCready Price, a Seventh-day Adventist educator, saw the war's devastation as evidence that evolutionary thinking had failed humanity. The book became a foundational text of modern creationism, arguing that the biblical account of creation deserves equal standing with scientific explanations of life's origins. Price attacks the principle of uniformitarianism, that present-day geological processes explain all past changes, and contends instead that catastrophic events (particularly the biblical flood) better explain the fossil record. He positions himself as offering "new light" on creation, asserting that science itself is secretly discrediting evolutionary theory and returning to a miraculous, divine origins story. The text systematically reframes geological and biological evidence through a literalist biblical lens. Though thoroughly scientifically discredited, the book matters as a cultural artifact: it established rhetorical patterns still used in creationist arguments and helped forge the alliance between fundamentalist Christianity and anti-evolution activism that continues to shape American discourse.
