Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, Volume III, 1863-1867

A window into the scientific frontier of post-Civil War California. This volume captures the California Academy of Sciences during its formative years, documenting the first systematic observations of the state's extraordinary natural diversity. Here are the earliest scientific records of California's botany, geology, meteorology, and zoology, recorded by the men and women who first attempted to categorize the wild richness of the Pacific coast. The entries range from meticulous specimen catalogues to fieldwork observations made during expeditions into territories that still bore the marks of the Gold Rush. For historians of science, researchers of California history, and anyone curious about how the American West was transformed from wilderness into laboratory, these proceedings offer a remarkable primary source: not a polished history, but the raw, urgent work of discovery as it happened.
