Princess Sukey: The Story of a Pigeon and Her Human Friends

An abandoned Jacobin pigeon, too frail to be wanted by her own father, is left to die in the cold, until a young boy named Titus Sancroft discovers her and refuses to let her perish. This is the story of Princess Sukey, whose journey from near-death to beloved companion unfolds beside the fire in a wealthy household run by Judge Sancroft and his colorful staff. Saunders writes with quiet tenderness about the bond between a sickly chick and the humans who choose to save her, exploring what it means to care for something the world has discarded. The novel moves between moments of gentle humor and genuine emotional weight, tracing not only Princess Sukey's growth but the emotional journeys of the boy who saved her and the grandfather who watches them both. A charming period piece that captures early 20th-century attitudes toward animals and class, perfect for readers who treasure stories of unlikely friendships and small creatures who prove that courage comes in unexpected forms.
