Prince Ragnal, and Other Holiday Verses

In ancient Ireland, a prince afflicted with leprosy watches the Christmas festivities from afar, his pride having exiled him from the love of his life, Dympna. This is the spellbinding tale at the heart of Eleanor C. Donnelly's 1898 collection, where medieval legend meets Victorian devotion in verses suffused with candlelit grace and spiritual longing. The title poem builds toward a miraculous Christmas encounter that transforms Prince Ragnal's suffering into redemption, blending Irish folklore with the宗教 earnestness of late Victorian Catholic poetry. The surrounding verses celebrate the Nativity and early Christian traditions with lyrical tenderness, their sentimentality firmly of their era yet not without genuine warmth. Donnelly writes with the kind of devout certainty that characterized Catholic literary culture in the 1890s, her work aimed squarely at readers seeking spiritual reflection during the holiday season. These are poems to read by firelight on a winter evening, their faith unironic and their emotions undiluted.
